Select Ensemble is a highly curated performance experience for students who have completed at least one year of private instruction and are recommended or approved by their teacher. This advanced ensemble brings together musicians playing a variety of instruments to collaborate on thoughtfully arranged pieces, learning to perform as a unified group.

Unlike private lessons, which focus on individual technique and personal progress, Select Ensemble emphasizes the art of listening, blending, and responding to other musicians in real time. Students develop essential ensemble skills such as rhythmic precision, balance, musical communication, and adaptive playing within a group setting.

Participation in Select Ensemble cultivates confidence, leadership, and musicianship at a higher level. Students learn what it means to hold their part while contributing to something larger than themselves—experiencing the discipline and excitement of true ensemble performance.

What kids do in Select Ensemble

  • Joins by teacher recommendation only.
  • Advanced repertoire — beyond what regular classes cover.
  • Performs at studio recitals and community events.
  • An add-on to existing enrollment, not a standalone program.
  • Small group sized for serious ensemble work.

Admission to Select Ensemble is by teacher recommendation and approval. Interested students should consult with their teacher to discuss required skills and a personalized pathway toward eligibility.

Why group classes

Three reasons kids stick with the studio.

  • Collaboration builds better musicians.

Kids learn faster when they play with others. Listening, timing, and confidence grow on the bandstand.

  • Lower pressure, higher confidence.

Group classes take the spotlight off any one student. Mistakes are part of the music, not a performance review.

  • More fun means more learning.

When students love showing up, they practice without being asked. The hobby sticks.

Frequently asked

Questions parents ask about Select Ensemble.

Always. Every program offers a trial class. Drop in, see if the class feels right, then decide. No commitment until you’re sure.

Unlimited makeups. Sick day, sports tournament, family trip. All enrollments come with unlimited make-ups. No ‘use it or lose it.’

Not at all! Our classes for the littlest ones are full of activities that not only enhance child development but also ignite a love of music. It’s where lifelong musicians get their first nudge.

We offer year-round enrollment, so there’s no need to wait for a specific season to get started. Students naturally progress and level up throughout the year, and that’s all part of the process. We encourage families to begin whenever their child is ready—because the best time to start is now.

We know that schedules change, as do kids! We offer a variety of class types and times. We can work with you to find the right fit for your schedule. And if nothing works? You may withdraw with 30 days notice.

Students are invited to join by their private lesson teacher when they demonstrate readiness in their playing skills, practice habits, and ability to work well in a group setting.

Yes. This is an advanced group experience. Students should have a solid foundation on their instrument and be comfortable learning and performing pieces independently with guidance from their teacher.

Less than you think. We’d rather a kid practice 10 happy minutes a day than 30 forced. The class structure does most of the heavy lifting. Home practice is for reinforcement, not survival.

No. Students continue their private lessons as usual. The ensemble is an additional experience that complements and enhances their individual instruction.

Two formal recitals a year (winter is festive, spring is dressier) at Velocity Church, a few miles from the studio. Plus regular in-class showcases. Performance is part of how we teach. Not a stressful capstone.

Students take songs they’ve learned individually and rehearse how their parts fit together. They learn timing, balance, listening skills, and how to perform as a unified group.

Select Ensemble is designed for students across multiple instruments (such as piano, guitar, voice, and others), depending on the arrangement of each piece.

School band is fantastic when it’s available, but it usually starts in middle school and only covers band instruments. We start as young as zero, cover piano, guitar, ukulele, voice, and ensemble work. Our teachers specialize in young learners.

Yes. Ensemble groups typically have opportunities to perform in studio showcases and special events, giving students real performance experience as part of a group.

Beyond musical growth, students develop listening skills, confidence, teamwork, accountability, and the ability to adapt their playing within an ensemble.

The ensemble meets on a regular weekly schedule in addition to private lessons.

Select Ensemble requires a 4-month minimum commitment. An ensemble works best when students learn and grow together over time. Each class builds on the last, and consistency is key — not just for skill development, but for confidence and group connection.
